London 2012: “Greatest Games ever”

On Sunday night, after two weeks of London at its best, the Olympic flag was relinquished by Mayor Boris Johnson and passed on to Mayor Eduardo Paes of Rio de Janeiro. The ceremonial act was part of the Closing Ceremony marking the end of this year’s Olympic Games. The Games, hailed as the “greatest … ever” by Paes, included close to 11,000 athletes from 204 countries; 85 nations received at least one medal and 54 of these had their national anthem played to celebrate gold. The Games consisted of 302 events divided over 36 sports (26 if you’re the International Olympic Committee); if you didn’t know yet, many of these applied polyurethane! Below we’ve added a compilation of our favourite Olympic moments where polyurethane was used to either protect or improve athletes by raising their game:
